A series of Pacific storms is bearing down on the West Coast this week, starting Sunday 15 February 2026. Heavy impacts expected across California and spilling into Nevada.

Key hazards, week of 15-21 February:

  • Sierra Nevada: Extreme heavy snow. Feet of accumulation forecast above 5000-6000 ft, with up to 8 feet possible in highest elevations through mid-week. Travel extremely dangerous or impossible. Winter Storm Warnings active for Tahoe region and central Sierra. Chains required; passes likely closed.
  • California coasts and lowlands: Widespread rain, 2-4 inches cumulative, locally higher. Flash flooding risk elevated, especially urban areas and rivers. Gusty winds accompany fronts.
  • Southern California burn scars: Evacuation Warnings issued for multiple Los Angeles-area zones (Palisades, Hurst, Sunset fires). Debris flows possible with heavy rain Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Prepare go-bags; monitor local alerts.
  • Southern Nevada: Strong winds from storm edges. Minor precipitation spillover possible, but main threat gusts impacting travel and loose objects.

Storms arrive in waves through Thursday, delivering much-needed moisture after dry start to winter. Snowpack boost significant for drought-hit region, but immediate risks dominate: avalanches in mountains, road closures, power outages from wind/snow.

Residents: Secure loose items, avoid unnecessary travel in mountains, check Caltrans/Nevada DOT for road status. Lowland areas: watch for ponding, urban flooding.
